Abstract
Infections with Gram-positive micro-orgamisms are an increasing cause of morbidity and mortality in granulocytopenic patients. Teicoplanin is a new glycopeptide antibiotic, chemically related to vancomycin. Teicoplanin has the same antibacterial
spectrum of vancomycin with the added advantage of a long half-life, allowing once-a-day administration.
The clinical efficacy of teicoplanin and aminoglycoside combination as initial empiric antibiotic therapy was evaluated in 20 febrile granulocytopenic patients. Clinical response rate was 70% (14/20).Microbiologically documented infections
accounte
for
40% (8/20). Microbiologic response rate was 67% for G(+) and 40% for G (-) infection. No severe side effects were documented in any patient.
In conclusion, Teicoplanin is a safe and effective anti-gram-positive agent as an empiric therapy in febrile ganulocytopenic patients.
